Portland Dance Collective:
A Community Dance Project
Hello! This website is totally under some major construction and you should definitely check back soon to see some super awesome updates, but here’s some information on who we are and what we’re doing with dance in Portland and our community!
Our Mission:
Portland Dance Collective is a community dance project — a platform for movement artists to pursue the gift of creative opportunity.
We’re here to give dance lovers the chance to be active dance artists.
(You’ve heard of community theater, right? Well, we are communuty dance theater!)
We value diversity in our members and celebrate collaboration between backgrounds and disciplines in dance. We believe that artistic expression is an important element of a full and rich life.
I usually describe our style of dance as “contemporary adjacent” but even that vague descriptor feels limited – in embracing diversity and individuality we have passions for many dance forms and leave ourselves open to explore the movement styles that resonate.
We Need More Dancers Right Now!
We are holding rehearsals open to interested dancers from December 6 thru January 3! Please email your inquiry or just show up to dance with us and see if this a great fit for us all!
Location: Portland Dance Studio – 232 SE Oak Street, Portland OR 97214
Day and Time: Fridays from 1pm till 2:30pm
The collective currently has 5 members in total and we would like to have more like 10 so please bring a friend. We would love to meet you! Here’s some possibly hepful FAQ to give you an idea of what to expect…
What style of dancing is this?
The best description I have is contemporary dance but dont let that narrow it down too much (if you have more experience in jazz, ballet, modern, hip hop, ethnic forms, or other things I may not have heard of, that’s great too!)
How much dance experience are you looking for?
I would recommend folks come with at least a year’s formal dance training of some kind. Very little dance experience but a willingness to play and learn could work out great. Years of experience is also great.
What will we do at rehearsal?
Dance together! Yay! About half the time will be spent in warm-up slash company class and then we’ll move on to some play with movement and choreography and ideas collective members want to play with. We’ll chat a bit too about direction and goals
Do I need to have a resume or headshot?
Nope! I’ll have a little form to fill out some of your contact info and I will eventually ask for a bio and some dance shots for our social media but dont worry about bringing anything with you.
What should I wear?
Whatever you feel comfortable in. I dont care about your body type but I do want to see how your body moves. Wear what you feel good in. Barefoot is fine, socks might be slippery, no street shoes
What are you looking for in a dancer for the collective?
Good energy and playfulness. A decent sense of body awareness and a passion for movement. If you have experience or a desire to play with choreography and help run the collective, also great!
Is there parking nearby? Is it safe?
Kind of. This is in the SE industrial area and the street parking is super weird. Most of it is marked 2 hour parking during most hours. I’ve often found parking to be limited but not impossible. Please give yourself ample time to park or consider taking public transit. Do not leave valuables in your car
How do I get in the building?
You can text me at 586-770-7838 to be let in within the first 10 minutes if you dont see me (tall woman with blue hair) outside. It would be great if you could try to show up 5-10 minutes beforehand too but I know its hard to get access easily.
Help! I have more questions! I need more information!
Just email me! I’m sure I’ve forgotten things and I’d love to help you out.
Also, if you can’t make it to any of the call dates but you think you’d otherwise be a great fit for the collective please email me!
